According to the Nutrition almanac there is no difference in calories between the two types.

What is the difference between a nutrition and a dietetics degree?

10 August 2010 Categories: Nutrition

Hi, so it’s time for me to really think about what undergrad degree I’m going to work towards. But the university where I’m going cancelled their dietetics degree program (Faculty of Biochemistry) They do still have a Nutrition program. So, what I want to know is: Is there any significant difference between a nutrition or dietetics degree? Could I still become a dietition with a nutrition degree?

Almost anyone can call themselves a Nutritionist and attempt to provide service without formal training, education and licensing. A dietitian, however, has completed several years of advanced college study to obtain at least a Bachelor’s degree and Dietetic Internship. This training, along with completion of the registration exam, is required for employment in hospitals and other Health care facilities. The career opportunities and salary potential are far greater for Registered Dietitians.
Bottom line, you can become a dietitian with a nutrition degree after you get more education. A degree in nutrition alone won’t get you there.

What career opportunities are there in nutrition?

08 August 2010 Categories: Nutrition

I have just graduated with a bachelors degree in nutrition and food science. I did not plan on taking this any further. Now I am taking the year off to apply to medical school. Medicine is my passion, but my chances of acceptance do not look good, so I am looking into a masters in human Nutrition, and going on to get a PhD. I figure that I’ll still be involved in Healthcare, even if it is not my first choice. Besides teaching and research, do you know of any career opportunities in nutrition and food science with either a masters or PhD? Thank you in advance for your answers.

Nutritionist is a big one, there’s a lot of demand. You could work at a K-12 school, almost any university, or even some companies that keep nutritionists on staff. Also, I think a lot of gyms have them. I have a friend who’s a neonatal nutritionist and is very successful.

I eat a Healthy diet with fruits and vegetables and it is fairly balanced. I also think I eat enough. Do i need to worry about proper Nutrition if I exercise at a higher intensity such as running for up to 25 minutes? Is it possible to get Exercise migraines if you don’t have proper nutrition?

Yes you can get a migraine from over exertion. Migraines can come from cutting something out of your diet. Your migranes could also be coming from not having enough water flowing through your blood. Try drinking more water and see if your migraines go away.

What is considered good nutrition for a horse?

05 August 2010 Categories: Nutrition

I need to know about maintenance nutrition, sporting or working nutrition and energy feeds, and gestation/lactation Nutrition for a horse. I prefer holistic methods if possible but any information would do.

The above answer is good, but if you are looking for a more holistic and natural diet, consider this. A normal horse should consume 5% of its bodily weight daily in food, 2% of that should be in hay or pasture. A 1200lb horse should eat 60lbs of feed a day providing he is being Exercised, 24-30lbs of that should be hay or pasture. Maintenance diets should make up 3% of the horse’s weight and can mainly consist of roughage (hay). Pregnant mares require balanced vitamins and minerals, good hay and grass are a must, sunlight is important too for vitamin D. Many feed stores carry natural supplements for your horses. I recommend feeding flax seed as it is high in vitamins Amino and fatty acids which are very important (buy it whole and grind it fresh every day with a coffee grinder ) it looses potency if purchased ground and they will not digest it if it is whole.
