CrossFit – “The Foundation Is Nutrition”
Combining the CrossFit training methodology with a diet of meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar brings “a jet stream of adaptation,” says CrossFit founder Greg Glassman.
In the pyramid Glassman created, nutrition is the foundation, with met-cons, gymnastics, weightlifting and throwing, and sport following.
“Each level builds on the level below it,” explains Nicole Carroll, director of certification. “If your Nutrition sucks, these things will not be where they could be if it were more solid.”
Likewise, Glassman says CrossFit favors Barry Sears’ Zone Diet “because it does give me accurate and precise prescription for caloric intake and, more importantly, the exact levels of macronutrient that I can start at.”
Likewise, trainers and coaches can make informed decisions on how to tweak an athlete’s diet for improved performance, he says.
CrossFit HQ trainer Pat Sherwood says nutrition isn’t an either/or aspect of training.
“It’s not quality or quantity. It can and it should be both.”

Here’s what I’ve eaten today:
6AM – 3 Scrambled Eggs, 2 Slices of Toast, 1 Pint of OJ, 1 Yoghurt – 600kcal.
9AM (post-workout) – 1 pint of milk, 1 scoop of whey – 465kcal
1PM – 2 cold-cut sandwiches (turkey and chicken), 900ml of milk – 1040kcal
5PM – 1 bagel with peanut butter and banana – 300kcal
9PM – 2 chicken tortilla wraps and 1 pint of milk – 700kcal
Total caloric intake – 3105 calories.
Workout (Dave Maurice’s Foundation Routine)
Squat – 3 sets of 10.
Overhead Press – 3 sets of 8.
Deadlift – 3 sets of 8.
Pulldowns – 3 sets of 8.
Bench – 2 sets of 8.
Crunches – 2 sets of 10.

Today I am making a green juice, lemon ginger blast with spinach, celery, apples, courgette, lemon and ginger to hydrate, alkalize and energize my day. Also a green smoothie of banana, dates and spinach. Some almond milk how to make and a selection of nuts and seeds consisting of walnuts for omega 3 fatty acids, brazil nuts for selenium and manganese and pumpkin seeds for zinc. The almonds are high in calcium. I have a carrot and ginger juice as a pre or post workout meal and my cooked food option is brown rice and brown lentils
